I understand that if you were to attempt to travel to the edge of the universe, you would eventually end up exactly where you started, due to the way space is bent. Maybe the gravity of the universe is pulling itself outword towards its edges. In effect, it might be expanding, because all points of it are trying to fall towards itself, and expanding space as it does. This might account for its increasing velocity.
