But only conscious beings have the opportunity to realize it. I think Jesus was praying that we should become realized.

Of course, we can maintain our separate consciousness if we wish. Or as the Buddhists prefer, we can completely merge with Nirvana and lose our conscious identity, but perhaps live in bliss. Personally I prefer to maintain my identity as long as possible, which probably comes from my pride and ego.
