LCQ derived a discrete, background free, fully relational theory from GR. It never required extra dimensions or supersymmetry. At the same time it really doesn't have anything to say about string [or particle] interactions as a quantum theory. Smolin hopes that a symmetry exists between LCQ and some form of string theory where the string theory is a good approximation of quantum gravity at a slightly larger scale [the string scale which is several orders of magnitude > LCQ's Planckian scale]. With this approach string theory could still be a part of the entire solution even though it is perturbative and background dependent. LCQ is the format for exact solutions so far.
