Very recently the loop quantum gravity people lead by Smolin from Harvard and now at the Canadian Advanced Institute have reproduced the big bang including inflation from quantum loops. There is no assumption of spacetime in their approach. Instead the usual spacetime falls out of the derivation without the need for extra dimensions, wich makes it inconsistent with string theory. I,ll get you the reference when I check the Cornell archives this AM

Richard

PS Not time loops as time as well as space are formed from the loops.
