Thanks to all who responded. Actually my problem is not with the cleaning itself, but taking the the thing apart. As Robert suggested, it looks pretty waterproof, but somehow dirt streaks have gotten on right at the plane of the cross hairs. The cross hairs themselves are in perfect focus so the point about not fixing something that's not broke is well taken! HOWEVER, I bought this level used at an eBay auction purely for fun, and I enjoy tinkering. Hence my original post.

It would be nice if I could clean it up a bit though because the optics (except for the blemish on the crosshairs) are in very good condition. It is made by Berger Instuments and there is a thing that looks like a pin or rivet of some sort that keeps me from getting at the eyepiece assembly.

Appreciate any help. I enjoyed Darren Henning's article on cleaning optics. I'm having some trouble finding 99% isopropyl alcohol. Walgreen's only sells 90%.
