You're going perfectly. The center will polish out first usually although not always. It is when you have finished out polishing that the figure becomes important (it should be a paraboloid if you're making a Newt.). Several of the mirror people that I have been working with (go see the SDAA mirror grinding classes on the web) actually have had turned up edges which are easy to fix. You might also consider doing the tool on top and try for a paraboloid at the beginning. Feel free to ask more.
