: Hello,

: Could I put a window on the front of a telescope to protect it against dust? : Is it possible for Newton and Cassegrain?

: Thanks, : Noper.

I posed this question last fall & got all-negative responses. Here in central Canada, the problem is VERY cold winter temperatures.

I eventually got a "scientific second opinion" from a NASA astronomer - 'Yes you can use a window BUT it MUST be optical glass' Window glass and other common glas will cause distortion but optical (lense quality) glass will not but it is not cheap.

One thing I noticed is that certain filters made for telescope use use a thin layer of clear mylar stretched very taut. I am going to give this a try before I lay out significant dollars for a sheet of optical glass.

Good luck.
