The ol' choice between two different scope designs is here again!
The problem is that one person may consider that the color problems with refractors to be worse than the roughness of a Mak design.
Personally, I'd go with another refractor with a longer focal length as this does two things for the scope. It increases the image scale which makes high power views easier to obtain with the eyepieces available. Note that there is a 50x per inch basic resolution limit which says that you're going to be seeing no more than 250x before "empty" magnification starts happening.
With the Mak, the central obstruction will decrease contrast slightly as well as drop the brightness of the image a little bit compared to the refractor of the same size.
One person will enjoy one scope more than the other but I'd suggest that if you are considering a 5" refractor, take the same amount of money and go for a reflector of a larger size for about the same amount of money.
