| 5"refractor Verses 5"compact "mak" Telescope

I'm fairly new to astronomy, and I was thinking of getting a refractor for moon and planet observation. I thought I could afford a 5" refractor. Then I came across the add for the compact 5" Maksutuv-Cassegrain telescope. In this case it was the Orion. Now the refractor has a focal length of around 1200,while the mak. has about 1540 focal length with it's light folding ability. Of course it shows it along side a regular 5" refractor. Is there anybody out there who has had experience with both of these types of scopes,and can compare their capabilities. Is the small "Mak" equal to the regular 5" refractor? Any help would be useful in deciding which way to go.One scope sure is a lot easier to carry. But I don"t want that to be the deciding factor. Thank you, george |
