Pivot Point In Dobsonian Mount

I built a dobsonian mount for my 8" f/6 and the pivot is in the middle; since it does not look good (I built it with cheapo plywood) I am building another one. Most pictures I have seen show the pivot near the mirror end of the tube. THis seems like it would give better control, does it? Any other reasons for this location? Also my bearings are only 5.5" or so; any real need to go larger?

Thanks
James
