Dave, your plan of attack is the right way to go. As you get the ROC out to about where you want it to be, check often. You can hold the radius at the correct point by reversing the tool/mirror positions as required. If you are careful, you can control the ROC, and thus the focal length, to very close tolerances. Plus or minus a 1/2" is easy and careful measurement will allow you to hold it even closer.
