Testing For Tempered Glass

If the glass has any scratchs, chips, or gouges of any kind, It's probably not tempered. Any of the above would have caused it to shatter long ago. Checking as Bob May will reveal any stresses that might indicate a problem but these will not be the same as for tempered glass. Thick table tops of this type were usually not tempered and depended on the thickness for their strength so you probably have a piece of glass you can use. If in doubt, chip an edge. If it shatters into a thousand pieces, it was tempered and if it stays in one piece, you can probably get useable blanks out of it.
