First thing to remember with any optic is to not get it too dirty in the first place :) Otherwise, you will get scratches from trying to remove a gravel bank from your glass no matter what method you use.

I like the Ivory Soap and water mixture with a wad of cotton being *dragged* across the surface. Also, I have had no problems using isopropyl alcohol, despite some comments about impurities. Rinsing with distilled water follows in either case. In the case of mirrors, warming up the disk a bit makes blotting any excess water droplets a breeze. Too warm a mirror will cause spotting from droplets that go to dry before blotting takes place; I am talking a ten or fifteen degree rise; that is all; plate glass mirror owners take note.
