I would start with a nice dinky 6" mirror kit and make all your mistakes with this size. The time spent grinding a 6" and a 12" is less than it takes to do a 12" alone.

This old fashioned advise has stood the test of time. Save the inexpensive 12" blank for later; it will always "keep".
