Mirror Tool Question

I'm thinking about grinding a 8" f/6 mirror. I'll probably order the kit from Newport. Do I really need a plate glass tool or can I make one? I thought I saw somewhere that a tool can be cast from plaster or something. Also, if I do use a plate glass tool, can it be used again to grind another mirror since it would already have a generated convex?
