Sonotube is a particular brand of concrete form tube. I'd be quite supprised if your concrete or wholesale building store doesn't have that in a number of sizes.
3/4" plywood is more than enough for a dob base. I've got a telescope that I got about 15 years ago and it uses that and it is a real pig to move about without back strain as a result.
Your best bet is to find a friend that is a woodworker and discuss with him the building of the scope. John Dobson built his scopes fairly light and they all worked well.
