your desire to learn how to use a GEM [german equatorial mount- as opposed to just jumping on the 'goto' bandwagon].

The 'short tube' scopes generally have some sort of built-in barlow [often of questionable optical quality] to increase the focal length of the OTA and usually don't perform as well as 'regular' newts. With the 130's you'd be dealing with a larger aperture as well.
