Tube Length?

Hi,

I'm making a 10" dob. Should the sonotube be cut to the same length as the focal length? Or should it be longer to cut down on stray light?

Also, I really don't like the looks of dobs that have a box built around the tube. I would like to mount the bearings to the tube, but I'm worried about strength and future balance changes. Would it be alright to take a foot or so of the extra tube and cut it open, attach the bearings to it and then wrap it around the tube and secure it with big hose clamps?

Thanks
