I'm kind of paranoid in this respect. I don't like to have anything touching the surface of a mirror.
Plastics have their own problem in that they tend to exude the plasticizers that make them flexible and, as such, don't like to see them used in the vicinity of any optical surfaces.
Personally, I'd make boxes that just hold them by 3 points on the edge of the back and insure that they aren't used for packing about. If that is needed then 3 points at an angle that are attached to the top of the box are what I do. I also use thick cloth (denim or such) to cover any surfaces, mostly for the gentle, resiliant touch they provied by the cloth against the wood.
