what you say is applicable primarily to a paraboloid,where the thickness of substrate varies from peak to valley,(thinner at center, and thicker at edge) in this case there would be slight localized deformations, a spherical shape is what i had in mind, also i did consider "a mechanism to allow for expansion/contraction between mirror and cell" a type of shape memory composite.
