Most of the surface area is contained within the outer edge of the mirror, and central imperfections(depending on how severe) are not as critital as an edge defect, to achieve diffraction limited performance the light reflected from outer radius falls inside the airy disc, thus increased contrast/resolution, keep at it, just carefully control the strokes!
