I think the general concensus among atm and even most professional optical workers is that it's a technique that hasn't quite been perfected yet. Lightweight mirrors are being made by fusing glass pieces together in a honeycomb configuration or even cast in that type mould, but the present day epoxies and other type adhesives just don't do the job of bonding thin plates to build up the thickness.
However, that said, why don't you try a good high end epoxy and a couple smaller, like 8" diameter, pieces and see what happens. Shouldn't cost you more than a couple months spare time and then test out the resulting mirror before coating. Let us know what happens.
