I think the general concensus among atm and even most professional optical workers is that it's a technique that hasn't quite been perfected yet. Lightweight mirrors are being made by fusing glass pieces together in a honeycomb configuration or even cast in that type mould, but the present day epoxies and other type adhesives just don't do the job of bonding thin plates to build up the thickness.
