Take a look at this site:

He shows photos of a mount he made of 3/4 inch plywood and he based it on Kriege and Berry's book on making a large Dob. One advantage of the 3/4" stuff is that it's extra weight can help balance your scope a bit, especially if it's F/7 or longer. But if you are trying to save weight high quality Baltic Birch plywood will probably do and you can always add 1/2" pieces here and there for extra support.

I have also read that "Apple Ply" is very good wood too. Home Depot does not seem to carry Apple Ply though. Check a Lumber yard.

Bottom Line: You can make one from wood!
