Hi Rick,
I've never tried that, but considering how wood can warp as moisture content changes I think it would have to be sealed really well. I've seen pictures somewhere on the web where plywood was used as a base for plaster on a larger tool/lap, but I can't remember where. I don't think I would trust plywood to be stable enough for a pitch lap unless I got assurances from someone who had actually done it. Hope that's a little help but I know it's not much.
