Glass Not Metal

so glass gives longevity and a fine finish

what if you used a high tensile metal, maybe even hardened? creating the shape would be no problem for us as Engineers(and we could harden it easily)and we could polish it well, but would we still be able to coat it in aluminium and how fine a finish would it have to have in order to take the coating?
btw how long does the coating last on glass?
