Forget that whole nonsense and make a cradle for the tube with wood or metal (if you can work with it) and that will work a lot better.
A 4" or so long cradle will hold the tube quite rigidly and also allow for the support of decent sized bearings for the axis. You do want to use hardwood and you might want to look about for a tree that got cut down a while ago for good wood to use. Some areas of the country have people cutting down oak and other fine hardwoods all the time and throwing the wood away.
