Cassagrain For A Beginner?

I've had a Celestron 8" schmitt cassagrain for about 16 years now, and I guess it's a pretty good all around scope, but it just leaves alot to be desired for my planetary viewing. I'd like to build a 12 inch cassagrain with a higher f ratio. 15 or better. Just a couple questions to start with. How much more difficult is it to build a classical cassagrain compared to a Dahl-Kirkham? How noticeable are the inherant visual flaws in a Dahl-Kirkham at higher f ratios? And how high an f ratio can I go before the secondary would be to small to expect a beginner to grind well? Thanks for your input, and expect me back with tons of questions once I get my copy of Texereau's book.
