I'd not worry too much about heat from the hands and if you do, wear some heavy winter gloves that you don't mind getting wet - just make sure that they are clean.
The early stages of grinding is where the most of the curvature changes happen. When you get down to 25 micron grit, you don't move the ROC by very much, nor should you as the strokes you should be using by that time should be fairly short.
