Digital Setting Circles aren't something that you can just take a few transistors and put them together and have a DSC. There's a lot of calculations that need to be done to figure out where the scope is pointing and also a bit of data storage to have star locations stored in the memory. Thus, a computer of some kind is always needed and that means that you need to have a program to run it. General purpose computers (laptop, etc.) also have the problem of getting the data from the encoders into the computer itself.
