Digital Setting Circles

I was at Chiefland a few weeks ago and saw a Starmaster dob with digital setting circles. Anyone out there have experience or plans on a build it yourself set? The 450 ~ 550.00 that a complete set goes for commercially seems a little much to me.
I have looked on the web but everything out there seems to be designed around a computer. Is that because the commercial units are proprietary??
I'd rather not have to invest in a laptop also.
