If you want to build a Petzval refractor, you need to go do a bunch of raytracing. The Petzval design is a very good design that allows for relatively inexpensive glass to be used to produce a fairly colorfree telescope. Unfortunately, refractor design isn't anything like reflector design and you might as well learn how to use a program like OSLO-LT to do some raytracing of the various pieces of glass.
Without being able to do things like that, you will end up with a refractor like one I saw at RTMC where the guy took a camera lens for a spy camera and took out half the lenses and wondered why it had color problems. His big problem was that one of the lenses was made with a yellow glass for the included filtering action.
Also, have you done a search on the web for Petzval lens?
