The secret here is to know how to carve. After that, it's just a matter of being able to cut straight with the saw and glue well.
One of the things that helped me with woodworking was watching the Woodwright Shop show on PBS and trying the various joints, etc. that the guy shows. Once you succeed making a little box with all of the dovetail joints, you will be a lot more confident about woodworking.
