mdf = medium density fibreboard.
It is wood dust that has been compressed together with glue. Being only dust it has no grain, when a few sheets are glued and bolted together it becomes very strong. Once painted/varnished to watertight you are left with wood which is equally strong in any direction. The fork I made is 60mm thick,600mm wide and 600mm tall and I can not phisically bend or twist the fork between the prongs and they are only 90mm by 60mm thick at the top.
