Dave and Bob,
There is a Cass design similar to what you seem to be referring to by P. P. Argonov (see 'New Techniques in Astronomy', Gordon & Breach, 1971, pp. 317-330). This design was mentioned by J. G. Baker in SPIE proceeding Vol 147, pp. 102-108. It uses all spherical optics with a Mangin airspaced secondary. I laid out a couple designs of it which shows some very good performance but these are only achieved by letting the diameter of the secondary increase to around 35+ percent.
