Hi Rick,
While I'm at it I'll explaing other possibilities.
For planetary work high light gathering is not
always the most important factor.
One idea is to use Silicon which produces a golden
yellow appearance and may help contrast on planets
Germanium is another possibility, though I don't
know where in the spectrum its absorbancy lies.
With germanium there is no need of a protective
coating. I have thought of progressively masking
the areas further from the center of a mirror
to produced the ultimate anti-diffraction effect
yet retaining the maximum aperture. Most of these
experiments would yield results of little or no
benefit, but one never knows.
The general public knows little about the efects
of thin film coatings. Its about time for a book
to be written for the lay-community explaining
some of the mysteries which many may find not so
terribly mysterious. My job is a lot of fun.
Al
