Wire spiders have several problems. The first is that the thickness is not going to be any better than that of a piece of sheetmetal. Next is that they tend to be a bit more springy than a sheetmetal one. You can reduce that springyness by using fairly large angles to the secondary but you then run into the big problem in that the pairs of wires needed each produce thier own diffraction effects so you end up actually with larger diffraction spikes than you would with a solid sheetmetal spider. Each edge of a wire produces a diffraction and you have 4 edges when you look at a wire vs. 2 edges with a sheetmetal one.
