Ball Bearings ??

I'm thinking about building an equatorial mount using ball bearings. For a very small telescope (under 5lbs) that will not be motorized but will have a hand controlled fine adjustment of some sort for tracking.

If the bearings are spaced out in pairs say 3" apart (4 in total)on a 5/8" or 3/4" shaft, & everything is kept balanced It should work ??

I want to build this one as a learning experience for a large one some day.

Thanks for any and all help
