The curve is a catenoid - a catenary shape. It's not all that far from a paraboloid but not there. This is the idea that is often used in making Schmidt corrector plates. Meade and Celestron use the method for thier plates. You may want to look up Schmidt Corrector Plates on the web as there is a very good article on figuring them with the vacuum pan method.
