Hi Rick

I think there are two possible causes of the blotches. (i have washed this mirror a couple times years ago, and the surface looked perfect at that time)

I washed it under running tap water, using one blob of dish detergent. If it isnt the paint fumes it has to be the water or the detergent. My big mistake was that i started the job assuming that i still had distilled water with which to rinse it off, but then found i had none. (i had left it in my previous house)

Furthermore, this is a brand new house (although built on the site of the previous one), and the water frankly tastes "weird". So... might be some naughty electrolytes in there.

Yes, the scope performs okay. I have recently checked it out with a Ronchi grating and got a near perfect pattern at all focusser settings (assuming i knew what i was doing). So my guess is that it is basically okay.

Might send it to Swayze Optical down the road in Portland OR and see what he thinks. His prices seem fair.

thanks for your help

Bob
