It sounds like that they can`t give you a curve generated blank over 36" but can supply you with a round of 40" that thick. Have you checked with Bob Geoff for the price o a meter sized blank? Then there`s contacting some of the observatories and universities about you and seeing where they have been getting thier glass and what that kind of prices are. Smaller pieces of glass are not so hard to get as you are starting to find out. You may actually want to make something a bit larger since you are already in the astro prices so to speak.
Actually $3,245 isn`t all that bad of a price for pyrex.
