Upgrade A Commercial Mount?

I have a Meade Starfinder Equatorial mount that I would like to upgrade. The problem I am having is I installed a guide scope and large finder along with the necessary counterweight and now it will not turn smooth enough to track or even balance accurately. It has, what the Meade engineers call, "nyliner" nylon bushings that I would like to change to oilite bronze bushings. Can anyone tell me if the bronze bushings would handle more weight than the nylon bushings? Has anyone else made this upgrade on a Meade or any other brand mount?

Any help would be appreciated.
