Rick`s comments on making things rigid are quite right! vibrations are longer and larger on a long, thin rod vs. a short, thick rod. Consider using tapered roller or thrust type ball bearings that can have preloads on them. Automotive front end bearings are a good cheap source of these as those bearings are large and quite able to take preloads without problems. Those bearings will also allow for larger diameter shafts which also meet the short thick rule.
