I plugged in "vacuum deposition of aluminum" into Google and got over 5K hits. On the first page most of them seemed to be about businesses doing vacuum deposition but there was an article about it there.
Generally, the process is to draw the vacuum and then evaporate some aluminum and let it coat the cooler mirror. If you want to measure the thickness of the coating, you use a crystal and measure the change of frequency as it gets heavier with the aluminum.
