Thanks for the reply. I`m not an expert on this topic, so you`ll have to forgive any technical errors i make in explaining the system!

The whole system - scope, encoder, transmission, software - has been built from scratch at the university, over a number of years. I myself am writing the software. The way in which the telescope is controlled is simply by a motor on each axis, along with an encoder on each axis. The computer calculates the position (azimuth and elevation) of the chosen satellite every second and the motors drive the scope to that position. My real problem i suppose is where 0deg is for elevation, and where it is for the azimuth angle. Is elevation 0deg flat(ie as measured with a spirit level) and azimuth 0deg directly north? Is polar alignment using the drift method appropriate here? Thankyou for your help,
