Surplus Lens Achromats??

Not to long ago I read a book on telescope making that had about two pages on designing achromat doublets, it touched on the calculations using abbe.v#s, index of refraction, ect. After reading this and seeing all the surplus lenses available, the idea of reverse designing a telescope objective sounded pretty interesting, but with all the variables to contend with the information on those two pages just wasnt enough. Ive checked out my local libraries
for more info but havent found any books on optics that really cover this. Does anyone know of any sources of info on this subject? Any advice? Thanks, P.M.
