: I have just completed a 10" F8 mirror. Most of the other bits are finished, a friend has given me the following CCD 1/4" 290000 pixel (512 x 560 pixel) amplified video ccd. Can I remove the lens and use the scope as a lens if I put the camera into a housing with optical flat window at front end? I would like to bring images onto video tape and use video capture card to grab images. Has anyone tried this? Please e-mail me with any --- ANY suggestions! Many thanks John B. Hi John and Robert: John, you didn't say what type of housing you have but just about anything is possible. As far as I know all CCDs have quartz window so unless you are cooling there is no need for another window. Just do your best to keep the dust out and only clean with a camel hair brush. I make a c-mount to telescope adapter. CS is the same but indicates a short couple on the camera to lens interface. A c-mount lens will work on a SC camera with a threaded bushing but a CS lense cannot work on a C-mount camera. The adapter I make will work on both as focus is determined by the telescope. I get $30 U.S. P.O. M.O. only, for them and that includes priority us postage. Your browser will take you to my page so you can see what they look like and my address but email me to save time. Now if you have a board mount camera, it is still possible just not as convenient. I just converted a digital camera to 1 1/4" mount. Within a very few minutes I can convert back and forth without any external sign of modifications. I have the very first shot taken with this mod posted in the astrophotography section of the astromart.com. When I get a digital camera I want to scrap my next digital camera hacking will be to cool it. Unless of course I can talk someone else to do it sooner. Image a Mega-pixel Cooled CCD for under $700....And it need no computer.... Happy Hacking, -Rick |
