: Ive bought a Copier lens and some pvc couplers - Should be fun making a spotter scope - Got the lens on EBay for about 10 bucks - 4" diameter.

You might try taking half of those elements out and see if that works better for you. If it does saw the barrel in half and have two lenses. Most copy machine lenses are symetrical and are designed to focus on close objects and reproduce onto a large flat field around twice the normal focal length.
