Hi, I would steer clear of home brewed 'geared' encoders. The precision needed for positioning a telescope would be hard to achieve due to gear backlash and the ability to accurately place the slits. US Digital sells encoders online starting at under $50 US so I don't see where there would be much savings in home brewing. Another factor is size the US Digital units are approx 2"x2"x1/2" anything home built would probally be much larger. If you are really set on making something yourself check out the canned mouse page at the link below. Keith |
