Hi. I am also new to afocal photography with a digital camera and have found some very helpful info on the web. Try these sites:
http://www.scopetronix.com/digicam.htm
http://www.barrie-tao.com/afocal.html
http://www.televue.com/engine/page.asp?cat=13

I'm using an Olympus C700UZ and an Orion 8 inch, f/4.9 Newtonian telescope. Note that Olympus.com didn't have the T-Ring adapter that I needed but I found it on Ebay (and cheaper-new). Your camera will probably record the settings that you used for each picture. Just experiment and record your results. If your camera doesn't have a remote cable then use the timer function to reduce vibration.

I hope this helps.
