Perseus

A member of the Perseus Family

Perseus Image

Background: The story of Perseus is one of the most popular Greek Myths, probably because it is nearly the only one where the hero gets a happy ending. Perseus was the son of a selfish king, who had heard a prophecy that his daughters(Danae) son would kill him one day. So he locked his daughter in a room so no man could get in. No mortal anyway. Zeus saw the beautiful woman in the room, and descended in a golden shower. Perseus was the result of this meeting. Hearing an infants cries from inside, the furious king stormed in, locked Danae and Perseus in a crate, and set them adrift on the sea. Poseidon guided the craft to land however, and their they met a kind fishermen who took them in as his own. The king of this island eventually learned of their arrival, and wanted Perseus's mother for his wife. He just had to get Perseus out of the way. Perseus did not have much money, and when their was a great feast, and everyone else brought gifts to the king, he had nothing. So the king sent him on a quest that he thought was impossible to complete. To get the head of Medusa. Perseus accepted, and embarked on his quest. With intervention from Athena and Hermes, he succeeded. On his way home he rescued the beautiful princess Andromeda from the kraken, and they later married. When he returned to his home island, he was able to stop his mother from being forcefully married to the kind, by turning him and his entire court to stone with the newly acquired head.
